There are many factors that need to be considered when choosing a storage unit including; price, location, security, accessibility and size. While some items can be placed in a standard storage unit, other items that might be sensitive to heat, humidity, mould or pests require a more specialist climate-controlled self storage solution.

Extreme Temperatures - Climate Controlled Self Storage

How do you know if your valuables need to be put in a climate-controlled self storage facility?

If your answer is yes to one of the following questions, climate-controlled storage is your best choice:

1. Does the item have a high sentimental value to you?
3. Is the temperature in your area unstable and prone to fluctuate quickly?
4. Can the temperature in your area rise above 90°F (32°C) or drop below 32°F (0°C)?
5. Is there a high level of humidity throughout the year?
6. Do you need to store your items for an extended period of time?

At Cube’s climate controlled area, one is likely to come across a variety of stored items. Among them, the most frequently found items are…

Sensitive materials

Items like wood furniture, antiques, artwork, paintings, musical instruments, leather furniture and goods, books, family photos, collectibles, and photographs are particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures and humidity fluctuations. These materials can warp, crack, fade, or develop mildew in uncontrolled environments.

In one of our projects in 2003, Eton College and the renowned furniture designer Luke Hughes enlisted the relocation and specialist storage services of Cube Fine Art Services. It involved the transportation and storage of delicate wooden benches from Hampshire to Cube’s facility, then their relocation in sequential order to be carefully installed at Eton College.

To preserve the optimal condition of the benches and protect them from harmful environmental factors, they were stored at our humidity and temperature controlled facility. To add an extra layer of safety, they were strategically placed on custom-built racking made by our storage specialists.

Wine

Wine is extremely sensitive to temperature changes. The optimal wine storage condition should be a consistent temperature between 50-55°F (10-13°C).

Climate Controlled Self Storage - Wine Storage

High temperatures can cause wine to age too quickly, lose its flavour, or spoil altogether. In contrast, excessively cold temperatures can obstruct the ageing process and diminish the flavour.

While high humidity levels can deteriorate labels and foster mould development, insufficient humidity can parch corks and give way for air to penetrate, causing oxidation and decay. For optimal wine preservation, the recommended relative humidity range falls between 55-65%.

To preserve the integrity of your wine collection, it’s best to avoid excessive light exposure. The compounds that give wine its unique colour and flavour are vulnerable to breakdown when being exposed. Our climate controlled self storage units make sure that your wine is shielded from harmful UV rays.

Electronics

Computers, cameras, and other electronic devices can malfunction or deteriorate due to excessive heat or moisture.

Organic materials

Fabrics, wool rugs, and organic products such as soap can attract pests or develop mould in uncontrolled conditions.

Perfume and Cosmetics

Similar to wine, perfume and cosmetics are prone to heat, sunlight, humidity and unstable temperatures. These factors can cause changes in texture, scent, and performance of the products.
